Getting Started

When you first realize that you want to go to boarding school you might have 0 to a few schools in mind. It is best to look for other schools to apply for so you have more variety( you might end up liking a school you never thought you would). You also shouldn't be biased on which schools you like just from the viewbook. The list below will consist of very good schools and their defining characteristics. Of course, all of these schools are noted also for their amazing academics and tremendously diverse community.

1. Choate Rosemary Hall: Famous Alumni and Arts Program

2. Deerfield Academy: Isolated, Sports, and Science Center

3. Groton School: Small, Groton Circle, and Starts in Eighth Grade

4. Hotchkiss: Huge Campus

5. Phillips Academy: Arguably the Best High School in the Country and the Oldest Boarding School in the Country

6. Phillips Exeter Academy: Arguably the Best High School in the Country and the Harkness Table

  1. I applied to three out of these 6, and I'd like to add my thoughts on those three.

    1. Choate Rosemary Hall:
I am attending this school in the fall. I felt a sense of community here that Exeter and Andover couldn't rival. I didn't feel any of the pressure and stress that Exeter seemed to exude, nor the sense of loneliness Andover students had. The athletics, academics, and arts blend together here in an almost perfect balance.

    2. Phillips Academy Andover:
I was waitlisted here. The campus was huge, and deserted during my interview. The students I did see were all hurried and tired looking, but also happy. They weren't freaked out, just a little worn down. My tour guide was awesome and fun, and she loved her school.

    3. Phillips Exeter Academy:
I was accepted here. The atmosphere was one of stress and academics. The sports I am interested in were not quite what I wanted in a school, and I knew I would have to give up a lot to focus on being a top academic student. I didn't like the stressful and tense way kids didn't look up from the path to say hi, or even acknowledge other students. But the arts department was amazing, the teachers were engaging and happy to be there, and the campus was beautiful.
